Characteristics of the Region (Sirjan)
Sirjan is a city located in southern Iran, part of Kerman Province. Kilims woven in Sirjan are also known as "Suzani" or "Silki Pichi," and the region has been registered by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as a kilim producing area.
Sirjan kilims are characterized by their extremely fine and firm weave. Nomadic women weave them based on their imagination, without patterns, resulting in astonishing delicacy and intricacy. They are sumak woven, with surfaces that are not very fluffy, and often feature animal and geometric patterns.
Furthermore, many Sirjan kilims have deep colors; red comes from cherries, blue from eggplant skin, yellow from saffron, green from walnut leaves, and brown from walnut husks or tobacco-derived dyes. Due to these characteristics, Sirjan kilims are highly valued worldwide and cherished as beautiful handicrafts.
What is a Kilim?
Persian hand-woven kilims are globally popular traditional hand-woven textiles that become more appealing with age. Depending on the period they were woven, they are called vintage kilims, old kilims, or antique kilims, and are loved by people of all ages. Most kilims are made of wool, but some are produced using cotton or silk. Natural materials are used. As natural dyes are also used for dyeing, you can use them with peace of mind. These hand-woven kilims are durably woven and are based on the design styles of tribes and ethnic groups, known as tribal rugs. They are characterized by geometric patterns featuring motifs from nature and animals, and each kilim has a unique design.
Various ethnic groups live in the vast land of Iran. The designs and colors vary by region of origin, offering a diverse range of design patterns to enjoy.
Other Uses for Kilims
Kilims are widely used not only as simple rugs or floor coverings but also as wall hangings, and as other interior items for sofas, tables, and beds. Their unique designs and colors are characteristic, and they are often utilized as room accents. Kilims are not merely decorative items; they are positioned as important elements that enrich the overall atmosphere of a room and highlight individuality. They add unique charm and warmth to a living space. By incorporating kilims, you can create a life with art and comfort, enjoying a life surrounded by your favorite things.
Kilims and Interiors
Kilims are extremely versatile and can be incorporated into various interior styles. In modern interiors, introducing the unique patterns and colors of kilims into a simple space adds an accent to that space. For natural and Scandinavian interiors, placing wooden furniture and plants, or combining them with natural material interiors, can enhance the warmth and natural feel of the kilim. They also pair well with a bohemian atmosphere; by laying them on the floor or hanging them on the wall, they can enhance the overall room atmosphere. Kilims have ethnic designs and a tribal feel, making them a good match for interiors that incorporate cultural elements from Iran, Turkey, and Morocco. By arranging them as tapestries or cushions, they can add warmth and depth to the entire room.
Daily Care
Remove dirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner or broom. If you are concerned about stains, dilute a neutral detergent (for wool/silk) with water and gently wipe the surface with a tightly wrung towel or similar. Afterward, thoroughly wipe with water to remove the detergent, then dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
Please Note
As these are hand-woven, there may be distortions in shape, weaving irregularities, and dye variations. Please enjoy these as part of the charm of hand-woven items.
