Characteristics of the Region (Sirjan)
Sirjan is a city located in southern Iran, part of Kerman Province. Kilims woven in Sirjan are called "Suzani" or "Silki Pichi" and the city is registered as a kilim producing region by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
Sirjan kilims are characterized by a very dense and sturdy weave. Nomadic women weave these kilims without a pattern, relying on their imagination, making their delicacy and intricacy astonishing. They are soumak-woven, with a less fuzzy surface, and often feature animal and geometric patterns.
Additionally, Sirjan kilims often have deep color tones, using dyes extracted from cherries for red, eggplant skins for blue, saffron for yellow, walnut leaves for green, and walnut shells or tobacco for brown. Due to these characteristics, Sirjan kilims are highly regarded worldwide and cherished as beautiful handicrafts.
What is a Kilim?
Persian hand-woven kilims are globally popular and are traditional hand-woven textiles that become more appealing with age. Depending on when they were woven, they are referred to as vintage kilims, old kilims, or antique kilims, and are loved by people of all ages. Most kilims are made of wool, but some kilims using cotton or silk are also produced. They use natural materials. Since natural dyes are also used for dyeing, you can use them with peace of mind. These hand-woven kilims are robustly woven and are based on the design styles of tribes and ethnic groups known as tribal rugs. They feature geometric patterns with motifs of nature and animals, and each kilim has a unique design.
Various ethnic groups inhabit the vast land of Iran. You can enjoy a diverse range of design patterns, as the characteristics of designs and colors differ by region of origin.
Other Uses for Kilims
Kilims are widely used not only as simple carpets or floor coverings but also as wall hangings or as elements in other interior items such as sofas, tables, and beds. Their unique designs and colors are characteristic, and they are often utilized as accents in a room. Kilims are not merely decorative items; they are positioned as important elements that enrich the overall atmosphere of a room and highlight individuality. They add unique charm and warmth to a room's space. By utilizing kilims, you can create a life with art and comfort, and enjoy a life surrounded by things you love.
Kilims and Interior Design
Kilims offer great flexibility and can be incorporated into various interior styles. In modern interiors, the unique patterns and colors of kilims can add an accent to a simple space. For natural or Scandinavian interiors, combining kilims with wooden furniture, plants, or other natural materials can enhance their warmth and natural ambiance. They also pair well with a bohemian atmosphere, enhancing the overall feel of a room when placed on the floor or hung on a wall. Kilims have an ethnic design and tribal feel, making them suitable for interiors that incorporate cultural elements from Iran, Turkey, Morocco, and other regions. Placing them as tapestries or cushions can add warmth and depth to an entire room.
Daily Care
Remove dirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner or broom. If you are concerned about stains, dilute a neutral detergent (for wool/silk) with water, wring out a towel or similar cloth firmly, and gently wipe the surface. Then, carefully wipe with water to remove the detergent, and dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
Important Notes
As these are hand-woven, there may be slight distortions in shape, weaving irregularities, or dye variations. Please enjoy these as part of the charm of hand-weaving.
