Characteristics of the Production Area (Sirjan)
Sirjan is a city located in southern Iran, belonging to Kerman Province. Kilims woven in Sirjan are also called "Suzani" or "Silky Pichi," and the kilim production in this region is registered with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
Sirjan kilims are characterized by their extremely intricate and firm weave. Nomadic women weave them based on their imagination without a design, so their delicacy and intricacy are astonishing. They are made with a soumak weave, which means the surface is not very fluffy, and animal and geometric patterns are often seen.
Sirjan kilims also often feature deep colors; red comes from cherries, blue from eggplant skin, yellow from saffron, green from walnut leaves, and brown from walnut husks or tobacco. Due to these characteristics, Sirjan kilims are highly regarded worldwide and cherished as beautiful crafts.
What is a Kilim?
Persian hand-woven kilims are globally popular and are traditional hand-woven textiles that become more appealing with age. Depending on when they were woven, they are called vintage kilims, old kilims, or antique kilims, and are loved by people of all ages. While most kilims are made of wool, some are produced using cotton or silk. They use natural materials. Since natural dyes are used for coloring, you can use them with peace of mind. These hand-woven kilims are strongly woven and are based on the design styles of tribes and ethnic groups, known as tribal rugs. They feature geometric patterns with motifs of nature and animals, and each kilim has a unique design.
Various ethnic groups live in the vast land of Iran. The designs and colors vary depending on the production area, offering a diverse range of design patterns.
Other Uses for Kilims
Kilims are widely used not only as simple rugs or floor coverings but also as decorative wall hangings or as elements in other interior spaces like sofas, tables, and beds. Their distinctive designs and colors are characteristic, and they are often used to accent a room. Kilims are not merely decorative items; they are positioned as important elements that enrich the overall atmosphere of a room and highlight its individuality. They add unique charm and warmth to a room's space. By incorporating kilims, you can create an artful and comfortable living environment, enjoying a life surrounded by things you love.
Kilims and Interior Design
Kilims can be incorporated into various interior styles with great flexibility. In modern interiors, the unique patterns and colors of a kilim can add an accent to a simple space. For natural and Scandinavian interiors, combining them with wooden furniture, plants, or other natural materials enhances the kilim's warmth and natural ambiance. They also pair well with bohemian aesthetics; placing them on the floor or hanging them on the wall enhances the overall room atmosphere. Kilims have an ethnic design and a tribal feel, making them a good match for interiors that incorporate cultural elements from Iran, Turkey, or Morocco. Arranging them as tapestries or cushions can add warmth and depth to the entire room.
Daily Care
Remove dirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner or broom. If stains are a concern, dilute a neutral detergent (for wool/silk) with water and gently wipe the surface with a tightly wrung towel or similar. Afterward, wipe thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any detergent, then dry in a well-ventilated shaded area.
Please Note
Due to being hand-woven, there may be distortions in shape, weaving irregularities, or dye variations. Please enjoy these as part of the charm of hand-woven items.
