Sirjan is a city located in the southern part of Iran, in Kerman Province. Kilims woven in Sirjan are called "Souzani" or "Silky Pichi" and the city is registered as a kilim production site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
Sirjan kilims are characterized by their very dense and sturdy weave. Nomad women weave them from imagination without designs, making their delicacy and density astonishing. They are Soumak woven, have very little pile, and often feature animal and geometric patterns.
Sirjan kilims also often have deep colors, with red dyes extracted from cherries, blue from eggplant skin, yellow from saffron, green from walnut leaves, and brown from walnut husks or tobacco. These characteristics have earned Sirjan kilims high international acclaim and made them beloved as beautiful crafts.
Persian hand-woven kilims are globally popular traditional hand-woven textiles that become more appealing with age. Depending on when they were woven, they are called vintage kilims, old kilims, or antique kilims, and are loved by people of all ages. Most kilims are made of wool, but some are also produced using cotton or silk. They use natural materials. Since natural dyes are used for coloring, you can use them with peace of mind. These hand-woven kilims are sturdily woven and are based on the design styles of tribes and ethnic groups known as tribal rugs. They feature geometric patterns inspired by nature and animals, and each kilim has a unique design.
Various ethnic groups inhabit the vast land of Iran. The designs and colors vary by region, offering a diverse range of patterns to enjoy.
Kilims are not only used as rugs or floor coverings but are also widely used as other interior items, such as wall hangings, sofa throws, table covers, and bedspreads. Their unique designs and colors are distinctive, and they are often used to add an accent to a room. Kilims are not merely decorative items; they are important elements that enrich the overall atmosphere of a room and highlight its individuality. They add a unique charm and warmth to a living space. By incorporating kilims, you can create a lifestyle surrounded by art and comfort, and enjoy living amidst your favorite things.
Kilims and Interior DesignKilims are incredibly versatile and can be incorporated into various interior design styles. In modern interiors, introducing the unique patterns and colors of a kilim to a simple space can create an accent. For natural or Scandinavian interiors, combining them with wooden furniture, plants, or other natural materials can enhance the kilim's warmth and natural ambiance. They also pair well with a bohemian atmosphere; placing them on the floor or hanging them on the wall can elevate the entire room's vibe. Kilims feature ethnic designs and tribal aesthetics, making them suitable for interiors that incorporate cultural elements from Iran, Turkey, or Morocco. Arranging them as tapestries or cushions can add warmth and depth to the entire room.
Daily CareRemove dirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner or broom. If there are noticeable stains, dilute a neutral detergent (for wool/silk) with water, wring out a towel or similar cloth, and gently wipe the surface. Then, wipe thoroughly with water to remove the detergent and dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
Please NoteDue to being hand-woven, there may be slight distortions in shape, weaving irregularities, or dye variations. Please enjoy these aspects as part of the charm of a hand-woven item.
