Characteristics of Persian Hand-woven Gabbeh
Gabbeh are long-piled rugs made from plant-dyed wool, hand-woven by the Qashqai tribe who nomadize in the Zagros Mountains of Iran, and are deeply rooted in their daily lives. The wool used in this product, known as Persian Variant, possesses excellent durability to survive the harsh environment of the Zagros Mountains, and its soft, pleasant-to-the-touch texture contains a lot of oil, which helps in temperature regulation.
The Gabbeh, made by meticulously hand-weaving this wool with natural dyes by Iranian nomads, is characterized by its plush and comfortable feel.
A tightly woven Gabbeh is said to be so durable it can last for 100 years.
Gabbeh, created in a climate with large temperature differences between day and night, also has the characteristic of being warm in winter and airy in summer, preventing a feeling of heat.
And, above all, there is its artistry. Gabbeh created by the nomads from their imagination often feature designs of animals and plants, with each piece being a unique, one-of-a-kind original.
They can be laid on the floor or even hung on a wall as art.
How about finding your own special Gabbeh that you can use for a long time?
Daily Care
Remove dirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner or broom along the direction of the pile.
If you are concerned about stains: Dilute a neutral detergent (for wool/silk) with water and gently wipe the surface with a tightly wrung towel or similar. Afterwards, wipe thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove the detergent, then dry in a well-ventilated shaded area.
Notes
Due to being hand-woven, there may be variations in shape and pattern, weaving irregularities, dyeing inconsistencies, etc. Please be aware that these are part of the charm of hand-woven products.
Also, Gabbeh are woven from sheep's wool. Therefore, there may be a unique odor from the dyes used on the wool.
This odor will gradually dissipate with use, but please be aware of this in advance.
